Proverbs 23 Insight #2
Jay and I have enjoyed this last month of studying Proverbs 23 together. One thing that we have begun to discuss again is Scripture memorization. We used to be very committed to memorization of Scripture and have found ourselves slacking in this area lately.
Here are a few Scriptures from Proverbs 23 that we have committed and are committing to memory:
v 12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to words of knowledge.
So often, we can hear ‘words of knowledge’ and hear ‘instruction’, but it is an entirely different thing to ‘apply’ to our heart the instruction received. This is an issue of self-discipline and prayer. To consiously apply the instruction received is where our self-discipline needs to come into action, and then through prayer God can help us to be moldable – to receive instruction – and to let it penetrate our hearts.
v 15-16 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
v19 Listen my son and be wise and keep your heart on the right path.
v 23 Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.
This is a prayer for our children – and one we want to be able to say with continued joy and confidence as we see this come true in their lives.
Following this – is the call for us as parents to lead as examples:
v26 My son, give me your heart and let your eyes keep to my ways.
We truly do become the ‘Jesus they see’ and we don’t want that to be skewed, but rather the ones they see that point them to Him.
